A PIECE BY SALIVA

Agar Plates, Bacteria, Resin, Video | Aug'17- Apr'18 | Dimension Variable

A Piece by Saliva is a project that explores various mediums to examine what it means to be human beyond anthropocentrism. By working with the living organisms in my saliva, it inverts the usual microscopic practice, deliberately projecting them into our world so that it will allow the viewers to observe these multitudinous organisms, like a performance. Making the invisible, visible. My own external ecosystem.

By merging art with biology, my art seeks to balance the feelings of fear and disgust with the aesthetics that surrounds these microbes.

Specimen 55 - Time-Lapse

The experiment started on 28 Mar ‘18

A total of 236 images were taken

With the time-lapse accompanied by the soundtrack, it shows how these microbes will sound like as if they were performing in an orchestra. Looking at the forms from the agar plate, making a composition out of it. Starting with a dark mellow sound, it brings out the atmosphere of where they came from, to something experimental.

A mixture of mid and high frequency, sometimes soft and muted, while sometimes intense and powerful. As the soundtrack becomes more polyphonic the inner parts of the compositions become more and more emancipated. Keeping its rawness of the growth and progression of the microorganisms, and the compositions.

The whole process is an experimentation, there isn’t a fixed way to do it. Having no fixed goal in mind, focusing on the aesthetic of these microbes I will be able to freely explore, and make use of the process of the experimentation to present it as a piece of artwork, allowing the audience to leave with an open mind.

A total of 55 plates were made and collected in 9 months.
